Sound advice from the car audio experts at Sounds Good To Me in Tempe, AZ. Ported vs Sealed Enclosures 101 for subwoofers: Which is right for your vehicle is dependent upon the music that you primarily listen to.

  • Ported boxes are louder than sealed boxes
Ported are 3db louder. 3 db is where humans (that would be us) can hear the difference.
  • Sealed boxes are tighter, quicker, less boomy
  • Ported boxes are bigger than sealed boxes

So what’s the best for you? Here is some data I collected in an easy to follow chart:

Music

Sealed

Ported

Pop Good Better
Rock/Alt Better (clean noise) Ok (little boomy but pretty good)
Classical Jazz & Blues Best Nope (too much low frequency – boomy)
R & B / Hip Hop / Rap Hell No! (you crazy…or white?) Hell Yes! (No contest)
Electro / Dance Good (til aound 11:PM, then meh) Yes, Best (Dis is what you want)
Country Best SOMETIMES (Depends on # of beers…)
Big Band Best (if you must know…) But really, grandpa? Who listens to Bug Band?

  1. It depends, I just purchased the SVS PB 1000 PRO.
Its has a 12″ driver in a double ported enclosure
The sub weighs 46 lbs. It is never boomy and sounds great no matter what you throw at it. Goes down to 17 Hz.
