By Muggs

Back in the day before the internet or smart phones the way retailing worked was a manufacturer would “anoint” a retailer to sell his brand at an agreed upon pricing schedule and the retailer in turn would be awarded some geographical exclusivity and together through various methods and channels drum up demand to increase product turnover and to return a fair profit for the manufacturer and retailer while keeping a tight control on the distribution of the product.

The retail system worked because it used checks and balances and tried and true methods of balancing the supply with the demand with regard to price. What was golden was for the manufacturer to produce a product that the demand easily outstripped the supply so the manufacturer and retailer could charge the retail or in some cases above the listed retail price for that particular item. This system was the model for probably the last 100 years I would venture a guess, but today this is no longer the case…I suppose the Apple iPad/iPod new version roll-outs still enjoy this scenario but not much anyone else.

But here is the rub as I see it. Using this system of distribution it was the manufacturer that set the price and therefore that items “perceived value” to the customer. In other words if, say, an Alpine deck cost $250.00 and every store everywhere sold that particular deck for $250.00, if then, you believed that it’s value to you was $250.00 or greater than you’d paid $250.00 for that Alpine deck. A “savvy” shopper back then would call around and try to find a shop willing to sell that Alpine deck for less than $250.00 and if so ask his local retailer to match it. Depending upon the price and scarcity or demand for that Alpine deck the local retailer would or would not sell at or below that price.

Now the upside to this system is that with a controlled distribution system the customer received an Alpine deck that came with a warranty and was worth $250.00. He felt good, the retailer felt good and so did the manufacturer. It worked for the most part. Sure, like everything else in life nothing is perfect but it was a doable system. But them day’s are long gone and now with the advent of the internet and smart phones the retailing paradigm is being rewritten and reworked every day by every store that is in the business of selling anything people buy.

So why am I talking about this when I should be extolling the virtues of Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Boston etc? Well maybe because I would like to throw this out to you. What the internet and smartphones with all the “apps” available has lessened both the actual and perceived value for most any product made and because of this many retailers are caught up in the “race to zero” which is an UN-tenable situation for the retailer. What has happened is that the channels of distribution have been “hacked” and now the hackers are selling these items at 2% – 3% and many times even less than what we pay for certain items which diminishes both the real value and more importantly the perceived value for that particular item.

What is the answer? There isn’t one. What are the problems with the item being sold for 3% over what an authorized dealer pays for that item by an unauthorized on-line web site? Well, from the retailers viewpoint it’s a no-brainer that he loses out on the money he would have made and the profit from that sale but what is I believe even more important is that now the customer sees less value in that brand or that model because he thinks he won because he paid less, in some cases a lot less. And of course when the unit malfunctions than the real fun begins and now the consumer has to rely on that low-ball web site to honor that product’s warranty because no authorized dealer certainly will and now he is pissed at the manufacturer as well as the dealer who won’t “honor” the products warranty.

Now the consumer see’s absolutely no value at all in those companies’ products because he feels he should enjoy all the benefits of those who paid the asking price while he decided to pay less. I have lost count on how many of these warranty “discussions” I have had with those who purchased products through the internet from unauthorized dealers and waltz into the shop expecting us to honor their products manufacturer warranty. Let’s just say some handle it better than others and some can be down right a$$holes. I am not writing this to scare anyone and I realize how hard it is to see something that you want for $300.00 at a shop or authorized dealer on-line than seeing the same damn item for $185.00 at some on-line web site. Hey it’s your call. I just offer consumer tips and shopping advice. But what can go wrong??

Why do I think the JVC KD-R820BT Deck is great value? The JVC KD-R820BT has BlueTooth hands-free capability, but so does the Alpine CDE-126BT and the Kenwood KDC-X695, but the JVC KD-R820BT also will STREAM AUDIO while the others don’t.

The KD-R820BT has 3 pair of pre-outs, so does the Kenwood KDC-X695 while the Alpine CDE-126BT has only 1 set.

The JVC KD-R820BT car deck will also control Pandora via USB with iPhone and with Bluetooth on other phones like Droids, and Blackberries where the others are not capable. The JVC also gives you a choice of colors to match your dash the others don’t.

So all in all the JVC KD-R820BT is a great value. They all come in around $220.00 and they have pretty much identical power, however another important consideration is when you are playing music from your iPod the JVC and Kenwood will sound better because the JVC & Kenwood uses the decks DAC which is superior than what is found in the iPods, so will render a more dynamic playback.

I don’t know why Alpine still reads and processes the file using the iPods DAC but I look for that to change soon, especially when more and more people are using lossless recording protocol which eats up the bits but results in a much cleaner, less compressed sound. You can come in and see all these decks and play with all the whistles and bells and ask us as many questions as you want.

Now that everyone and their grandmother (grandpa is still holding on to his Motorola brick, old codger.) know or are fairly familiar with the new “Smart Phones” and 4G network protocols these devices deliver and the countless “Apps” available not just for the iPhone/iPad users but the Droidsters, Crackberries, and all the rest of us becoming addicted to this technology.

Whether it is good or bad, useful or useless is all in the eye of the beholder, but like it or hate it they are here to stay and become more and more imbedded into our lives. But don’t fret, folks, me and Dave and the techies at Sounds Good To Me car audio & video electronics is here to chat it all out with ya and maybe even steer you to some pretty cool and useful apps.

So as these creative minds keep coming up with all these new apps, a lot are creeping into the “mobile” realm. Hell, Pandora is kicking the hell out of XM/Sirrius because of the way the content is delivered I suppose. But on that front, wait until the providers start capping usage and bandwidth and you can kiss those unlimited data plans goodbye as the providers eye the potential revenue and seeing the explosion of the apps requiring lots of data and bandwidth.

It’s a brave new world, and like it or not all of us are going to be offered these “wonderful” or “invasive” “good or bad” technology. Now and in your car next year expect to see lots of Bluetooth enabled devices along with a host of downloaded apps that will do everything from telling you where the police are watching (Trappster) to the cheapest gas. Amazing world we live and drive in. Sometimes though it drives us crazy.

Are you looking at a Great Deal on car audio electronics, like the JVC AVXxxx deck, from an unauthorized internet dealer? Beware of buying from on-line dealers; you may be burnt by the hidden costs.

By Muggs

I wanted to follow up my previous blog article, “Buying from an Unauthorized On-line Retailer“, with some numbers to help reinforce my point. It’s an important issue that I’d like all of you to be aware of. Note: if you haven’t read my previous blog entry I’d suggest reading that first.

So looking at the “Great Deal” the customer got on his JVC AVXxxx from the unauthorized internet dealer let’s break it down and see just how good it really was.

JVC AVXxxx via – internet: $400.00

JVC AVXxxx via – Sounds Good to Me: $600.00

So, you’re thrilled so far by the on-line retailer’s deal, right? But wait, there’s more!

Cost to remove JVC deck purchased thru internet: $45.00.

Cost to remove JVC deck purchased thru Sounds Good to Me: $0.00.

Cost to re-install the JVC AVXxxx deck returned from internet web site: $145.00*
*This cost is incurred because web site required ALL harness and cables be returned meant a complete new installation because we had to remove all wiring attached.

Cost to re-install JVC deck returned from an authorized repair facility like Sounds Good to Me in Tempe, AZ, near Phoenix, Arizona: $0.00*.

*This is because we would not have to send in any cables but only the unit itself for repair or replacement keeping installation complete and simple plug and play.

Now toss in the $25.00 that an unauthorized internet dealer wants in order to return the damaged unit not to mention the $400.00 already spent on the unit and now a total loss that makes the internet deck cost $400.00 deck + $45.00 to remove to send in repair + $145.00 reinstall when returned = $590.00. Oh and now add $25.00 for return postage plus the $400.00 already paid in even though you can’t use it and you see why this is no bargain. You do the math. Brutal.

Yes, I know that this is a worst case scenario but it’s played out a whole lot of times more than people know, I have even run across web sites that say that any shop that installs their (the web site’s) gear should warranty it themselves. It will be a cold day in hell before that happens, right?

I have spoken to these web sites “experts” and they will hemm and haww about all their gear being brand new so we, the authorized installer should be responsible. Yeah, right. So tread carefully and read the fine print about warranty issues and what is and what is not covered when buying from an unauthorized on-line dealer of car audio and vehicle electronics. It’s not the great bargain you may think it to be.

Sounds Good To Me car audio & video electronics and security alarm system installation specialists are located in Tempe, AZ, servicing the entire metro Phoenix area including Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale and Gilbert, Arizona. Call us at (480) 968-8543 or visit us at http://www.soundzgood2me.com.

By Muggs

I want to tell you of an incident that happened recently to a good customer of ours. I say this only as a caution and to be aware of what exactly went down from the customer’s point of view. The customer had been shopping around for a double din DVD player for his car and really liked a JVC model that had a detachable face. He then Googled the model number and of course found it for less than what any “authorized” JVC dealer could or would sell it for. (Note: It’s a fact of life we authorized dealers have to live within price restrictions)

Anyway, he goes and buys it from a low baller on Amazon and gets the JVC double din DVD player shipped to him and turns out installation specialists at Sounds Good to Me car audio electronics in Tempe, near Phoenix, Arizona to do the installation. When the unit arrived all seems to be good and begin to install the DVD player, however soon we realized that a little plastic guide that both secures and aligns the faceplate to the main body was missing/broke but or was not there. Bear in mind the deck works perfectly except that after repeatedly removing and re-attaching the faceplate it looses it’s “snuggness” and becomes somewhat misaligned and sits untidy.

This customer, being very particular, calls the seller and explains to them the situation. The web site sends him an email with detailed instructions on how to ship the unit back to the web seller. It stipulated that for any type of repair it must be complete in all cartons and cables and packing materials etc., which he still had. They instructed the customer to also double box the unit to further insulate and insure it arrive safely which both the customer and myself did. The customer requested that we package the deck and prepare it for shipping as the web site even included a UPS pre-paid label. However, I made sure the customer actually saw me packing the unit in both the original carton with the original Styrofoam as well as the second shipping box with another layer or two of peanuts with lots of tape. He even commented on the overkill but I said better to be safe than sorry and to follow the directions exactly to the letter.

About 4 days later I get a call from customer, irate, who wants to email a letter that the on-line retailer just sent him which it claimed that the unit was received “damaged” and therefore unable to abide by the warranty and if he wanted the unit back he would have to pay them to ship it back to him. They also said that he should initiate a claim with the shipper. Wow. That’s cold. After he calmed down a bit I asked him to ask the web seller exactly what was damaged and who signed for the package.

Secondly, because they had sent the shipping label they had to initiate the damage claim and he should find out if they took out the proper insurance because he was not given that option. So now it’s on. A full blown, down and dirty brawl between buyer and the web site seller.

Anyway, it has not been resolved yet and as it stands he is out the money he spent on the deck and the unauthorized web retailer is no obligation to make it right. That’s when I explained to him that’s why I wanted YOU to see for yourself the unit getting packaged and shipped with your own eyes so you know how it left. He agreed but still hurts and is not going to let them get away with it.

I had to remind him that #1 they are not an authorized dealer so getting it repaired under warranty was not an option for them so they did the next best thing…punt. If this happens to you I suggest you take pictures and document all what you do and make sure you dot all the “i”s and cross all the “t”s when dealing with these web retailers. This is not the first time nor will it be the last this happens but just be aware of what is happening and be aware when you buy an item below the authorized price from an unauthorized web retailer, your warranty may not be honored.
