So what’s hot in 2012 for car audio? What’s trending you ask? Well, Sounds Good To Me Car Audio Electronics in Tempe Arizona and Phoenix AZ, have been able to play with all the various makes and models at the 2012 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas I can tell you the word is….”Bluetooth” Bluetooth on this deck controlling Pandora on that deck, Bluetooth in your car and Bluetooth on your pancakes…well almost.
Alpine is launching a slew of new sku’s and most all of these come with Bluetooth connectivity PLUS also has the Audio streaming capability. I look for the CDE-HD138BT to be a MVP as it has a very strong feature set including HD Radio built in, 3 sets of 4 volt pre-outs, Sirius XM ready, and has Alpines upgraded BTS+ which will allow Android & Blackberry Pandora control via the Bluetooth streaming protocol.

It’s about time that some love was shown to the Android segment and it will grow ever larger as the platform becomes somewhat more standardized, but hell it’s Google and they can do whatever the hell they feel like.

Every Android phone is a whole new adventure in electronic wizardry and gadgetry and it’s damn hard to bring out a device to market only to see that the platform has changed. Look for Alpine to really rock it hard this year. Another direction Alpine is blazing is what’s called Alpine “Perfect Fit” and what that is an industry 1st 8″ screen that is a perfect match to the vehicles interior in both fit and color. Their plan is to have a number of various interior kits and hardware to fit 1 or 2 DVD/Nav screens and for the most popular driven models like the Chevy Tahoe, Toyota Camry etc. It’s most likely going to be a little on the “spendy” side but hey it’s an Alpine.

Look for this magic to happen early summer. I will write another article covering the other neat stuff coming down the pipe real soon.

Thin Is In

Pretty much everybody and their brother have come out with a thin or shallow woofer. For the most part these thin woofers sound pretty good too but keep in mind that for the most part they are an “application” speaker for which you will be paying more for.

By “application” I mean that the thinsters can fit into spaces where their big, fat brothers can’t. What some people don’t understand is that for the most part the regular sized woofers will sound better and hit harder than the thin versions.

Don’t confuse price with output. Just because you pay more for a shallow speaker does not translate into it hitting “harder” or sounding better than the regular size. The reason you’re paying more for a thin woofer is because it is a shallow speaker and is for applications like fitting under the seat of a late model Ford F250 where there is very little room to mount any damn thing much less a woofer inside an enclosure.

Lots of time and money was spent to figure out the optimal components of these shallow drivers. With the shrinking interiors of vehicles it made installing any type of subwoofer in a late model truck especially difficult and the result being “Janky” with the box taking up the whole floor or having to be set on the back seat.

Now I have some love for the JL Audio 13TW5 with its 7″ voice coil but it is a little spendy @ $700.00. Good news is JL is going to add a 10″ to the TW line sometime this year. What really stands out is the Rockford P3 shallows with a 10″ and 12″ that sounds damn good for a thinster.

Come in and judge for yourself I have them side by side for you to hear for yourself. But what’s way better than a floor model demo is let’s hear them in your vehicle…Hell it only takes a few seconds to hook a think woofer up if you already have a amp and sub set up in your car or truck. It is really a good indicator if these thin woofers do sound better or as good as the regular sized woofers.

We encourage you to evaluate subs this way instead of hearing them in a huge show room. Doing it this way you will easily hear the differences between the brands and various sizes of woofers. So trip on down.

The Retail Paradigm 2011

Back in the day before the internet or smart phones the way retailing worked was a manufacturer would “anoint” a retailer to sell his brand at an agreed upon pricing schedule and the retailer in turn would be awarded some geographical exclusivity and together through various methods and channels drum up demand to increase product turnover and to return a fair profit for the manufacturer and retailer while keeping a tight control on the distribution of the product.

The retail system worked because it used checks and balances and tried and true methods of balancing the supply with the demand with regard to price. What was golden was for the manufacturer to produce a product that the demand easily outstripped the supply so the manufacturer and retailer could charge the retail or in some cases above the listed retail price for that particular item. This system was the model for probably the last 100 years I would venture a guess, but today this is no longer the case…I suppose the Apple iPad/iPod new version roll-outs still enjoy this scenario but not much anyone else.

But here is the rub as I see it. Using this system of distribution it was the manufacturer that set the price and therefore that items “perceived value” to the customer. In other words if, say, an Alpine deck cost $250.00 and every store everywhere sold that particular deck for $250.00, if then, you believed that it’s value to you was $250.00 or greater than you’d paid $250.00 for that Alpine deck. A “savvy” shopper back then would call around and try to find a shop willing to sell that Alpine deck for less than $250.00 and if so ask his local retailer to match it. Depending upon the price and scarcity or demand for that Alpine deck the local retailer would or would not sell at or below that price.

Now the upside to this system is that with a controlled distribution system the customer received an Alpine deck that came with a warranty and was worth $250.00. He felt good, the retailer felt good and so did the manufacturer. It worked for the most part. Sure, like everything else in life nothing is perfect but it was a doable system. But them day’s are long gone and now with the advent of the internet and smart phones the retailing paradigm is being rewritten and reworked every day by every store that is in the business of selling anything people buy.

So why am I talking about this when I should be extolling the virtues of Alpine, Kenwood, JVC, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Boston etc? Well maybe because I would like to throw this out to you. What the internet and smartphones with all the “apps” available has lessened both the actual and perceived value for most any product made and because of this many retailers are caught up in the “race to zero” which is an UN-tenable situation for the retailer. What has happened is that the channels of distribution have been “hacked” and now the hackers are selling these items at 2% – 3% and many times even less than what we pay for certain items which diminishes both the real value and more importantly the perceived value for that particular item.

What is the answer? There isn’t one. What are the problems with the item being sold for 3% over what an authorized dealer pays for that item by an unauthorized on-line web site? Well, from the retailers viewpoint it’s a no-brainer that he loses out on the money he would have made and the profit from that sale but what is I believe even more important is that now the customer sees less value in that brand or that model because he thinks he won because he paid less, in some cases a lot less. And of course when the unit malfunctions than the real fun begins and now the consumer has to rely on that low-ball web site to honor that product’s warranty because no authorized dealer certainly will and now he is pissed at the manufacturer as well as the dealer who won’t “honor” the products warranty.

Now the consumer see’s absolutely no value at all in those companies’ products because he feels he should enjoy all the benefits of those who paid the asking price while he decided to pay less. I have lost count on how many of these warranty “discussions” I have had with those who purchased products through the internet from unauthorized dealers and waltz into the shop expecting us to honor their products manufacturer warranty. Let’s just say some handle it better than others and some can be down right a$$holes. I am not writing this to scare anyone and I realize how hard it is to see something that you want for $300.00 at a shop or authorized dealer on-line than seeing the same damn item for $185.00 at some on-line web site. Hey it’s your call. I just offer consumer tips and shopping advice. But what can go wrong??

Review of the JVC KD-R820BT Car Deck

Why do I think the JVC KD-R820BT Deck is great value? The JVC KD-R820BT has BlueTooth hands-free capability, but so does the Alpine CDE-126BT and the Kenwood KDC-X695, but the JVC KD-R820BT also will STREAM AUDIO while the others don’t.

The KD-R820BT has 3 pair of pre-outs, so does the Kenwood KDC-X695 while the Alpine CDE-126BT has only 1 set.

The JVC KD-R820BT car deck will also control Pandora via USB with iPhone and with Bluetooth on other phones like Droids, and Blackberries where the others are not capable. The JVC also gives you a choice of colors to match your dash the others don’t.

So all in all the JVC KD-R820BT is a great value. They all come in around $220.00 and they have pretty much identical power, however another important consideration is when you are playing music from your iPod the JVC and Kenwood will sound better because the JVC & Kenwood uses the decks DAC which is superior than what is found in the iPods, so will render a more dynamic playback.

I don’t know why Alpine still reads and processes the file using the iPods DAC but I look for that to change soon, especially when more and more people are using lossless recording protocol which eats up the bits but results in a much cleaner, less compressed sound. You can come in and see all these decks and play with all the whistles and bells and ask us as many questions as you want.

Mobile Apps Are Here to Stay

Now that everyone and their grandmother (grandpa is still holding on to his Motorola brick, old codger.) know or are fairly familiar with the new “Smart Phones” and 4G network protocols these devices deliver and the countless “Apps” available not just for the iPhone/iPad users but the Droidsters, Crackberries, and all the rest of us becoming addicted to this technology.

Whether it is good or bad, useful or useless is all in the eye of the beholder, but like it or hate it they are here to stay and become more and more imbedded into our lives. But don’t fret, folks, me and Dave and the techies at Sounds Good To Me car audio & video electronics is here to chat it all out with ya and maybe even steer you to some pretty cool and useful apps.

So as these creative minds keep coming up with all these new apps, a lot are creeping into the “mobile” realm. Hell, Pandora is kicking the hell out of XM/Sirrius because of the way the content is delivered I suppose. But on that front, wait until the providers start capping usage and bandwidth and you can kiss those unlimited data plans goodbye as the providers eye the potential revenue and seeing the explosion of the apps requiring lots of data and bandwidth.

It’s a brave new world, and like it or not all of us are going to be offered these “wonderful” or “invasive” “good or bad” technology. Now and in your car next year expect to see lots of Bluetooth enabled devices along with a host of downloaded apps that will do everything from telling you where the police are watching (Trappster) to the cheapest gas. Amazing world we live and drive in. Sometimes though it drives us crazy.
